Scenarios of the Cox-model filter and their interpretation. β2 and β3 are the coefficients for the gene term and gene × subtype interaction term in Equation 1, and they are the parameters of interest. Ideally, non-overlap of genes fitting case B and those fitting case E suggests existence of mutually exclusive subtype-specific prognostic genes. Character A-G represent different situations (or cases) for the proposed model.
